FAQ

Kitchen remodel questions, answered straight

The things people actually ask us, including the ones with awkward answers. You do not need to fill in a form first.

Money

What is a realistic budget for a kitchen remodel?
The one that matches how much of the room is changing. Settle the scope first, then set the number. A budget picked before the scope is a number waiting to be exceeded, and it is the most common reason a job goes wrong in month two. The cost page has the real Los Angeles benchmarks by scope.
Is $10,000 enough to renovate a kitchen?
Not for a full remodel. The Los Angeles average for even a minor one is $29,765. Ten thousand covers part of that scope, which in a small Valencia kitchen means painted cabinet fronts, a new countertop, a sink and a faucet. Genuinely worth doing. Just not a finished kitchen, and you should know that before you sign.
Which kitchen project gives the best return?
The smallest one. In Los Angeles a minor kitchen remodel recoups 126.9 percent at resale, the only kitchen project on the list that returns more than it costs. A major midrange remodel returns 56.9 percent, and it buys you a far better kitchen to live in. Worth knowing which of the two you are actually buying before you commit.
Do you offer financing?
We will not bring a financing pitch to your kitchen table during the estimate. If you want to discuss payment structure we are happy to, after you have the written quote and have had time to read it.

Permits and licensing

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Santa Clarita?
Usually yes, though not for the reason most people expect. Santa Clarita specifically exempts countertops and cabinets under eight feet from a building permit, along with tiling, flooring and similar interior finish work. The catch is in the same section of the code: anything electrical, plumbing or mechanical that comes with the job still needs its own permit. New circuits, a moved sink, a vented range hood. Our permit guide walks through it in detail.
Does a contractor need a license for a small kitchen job in California?
Since January 2025 the minor work exemption is $1,000, raised from $500 by AB 2622. Two conditions come with it: the work must need no permit of any kind, and the unlicensed person must employ nobody on the project. So any kitchen job big enough to need a permit requires a licensed contractor whatever it costs. If someone quotes you a permitted kitchen without a license, that is the moment to stop.
Who pulls the permit, me or you?
We do, in our name, and we meet the inspector. A contractor who asks the homeowner to pull the permit is asking you to take on the liability for their work. That is a real signal and it is worth walking away over.
Do you work on homes built before 1978?
Yes. Houses of that age can contain lead based paint, and disturbing painted surfaces in them falls under federal lead safe renovation rules. It is a fair question to ask any contractor before work starts, and a contractor who has no answer for it has told you something.

Cabinets and counters

How much should I expect to pay for kitchen cabinets?
Cabinets take the largest single share of a full remodel, ahead of counters and ahead of labor. Painting is cheapest, refacing is in the middle, replacement is the most expensive. Which one is right depends on the condition of your boxes rather than your taste. The cabinet page has a ten minute test you can run yourself.
What is the cheapest place to get kitchen cabinets?
Stock units from a big box store, and in a kitchen with standard wall lengths that is a sensible choice. The saving tends to evaporate in an older Valencia kitchen where the walls are not standard, because every leftover gap gets a filler panel and the fitting time goes up.
What kitchen color will not date?
Colors tied to a material rather than a trend. Warm white, natural oak and a soft greige have outlasted every accent color of the last twenty years. Put the trend on the hardware and the paint, both cheap to change in five years.
What is the new look for kitchens in 2026?
Warmer and less white. Colour on the base cabinets under a lighter upper run, wood and brass in place of chrome, and a full height slab backsplash instead of tile. Slab fronts keep gaining on shaker. None of it is a reason to remodel on its own, but if you are remodelling anyway it changes what you pick. The cabinet colours guide covers what dates and what does not.
Is Cambria a high end quartz?
Yes, it sits in the upper price groups alongside Caesarstone and Silestone. Every quartz brand sells across several groups though, so the brand name alone does not tell you the price. Ask for the group number when comparing quotes.

Living through it

How long does a kitchen remodel take?
The build is only part of it. Cabinets are made to order, and countertops are templated on the installed cabinets rather than from a drawing, so the schedule is driven by lead times as much as by labor. We put cabinets on order while the permit is in review so those two run side by side instead of end to end. Your written quote carries the schedule for your specific job.
Can I stay in the house during the work?
Almost everyone does. You will be without a kitchen sink and cooktop for most of it, so set up the refrigerator, a microwave and a kettle somewhere else in the house before demolition day. People who plan that in advance find it manageable. People who do not tend to eat out for six weeks.
Will my HOA need anything?
If you are in an attached home in Valencia, most likely yes. Associations here commonly want to see plans and a certificate of insurance before work starts, and many restrict working hours. We handle that paperwork rather than leaving it with you, but it needs starting early because it can move a start date by weeks.
What happens if you find something behind the wall?
We tell you, we show you, and we price it before touching it. That is what the allowance in the written quote is for. Nobody sees through drywall, so a quote that pretends there is no risk is a quote with a change order already built into it.
